Yuanyang Rice Terraces must be the most spectular ones in the world. It’s hard not to become indulgent when you want to describe these rice fields. Known as an artist’s palette of colours at sunrise and sunset, Yuanyang Rice Terraces were inscribed as World Culture Heritage site in 2014.
Yuanyang Hani Rice Terraces of China covers an area of 16,603-hectares in Southern Yunnan. It is considered as the most spectacular terraces that cascade down the slopes of the Ailao Mountains to the southern bank of the Hong River. Over the past 1,300 years, the local Hani people firstly settled down in Yuanyang and have developed a complex irrigation system to bring water from the forested mountaintops to the rice terraces. They have also created an integrated farming system that involves such livestock as buffalos, cattle, ducks, fish and eel and supports the production of brown rice, this area’s primary crop and main food.

The inhabitants worship the sun, moon, trees, rocks, mountains, rivers, forests and other natural phenomena including fire. They live in 82 villages situated between the mountaintop forests and the terraces. The villages feature traditional thatched “mushroom-shape” houses. The resilient land management system of the rice terraces demonstrates extraordinary harmony between people and their environment, both visually and ecologically, based on exceptional and long-standing social and religious structures.
