Yunnnan Beekeeper

In September, i accompanied a German film maker named Mike to Shiping County to shoot videos. We stayed with a local beekeeper for several . And then Mr Chen ——-the beekeeper led us to his bee farms to learn how to keep and breed bees.

In China , two kinds of bees are very common,   Italian bee and Chinese bee.  If you wanna harvest more honey, to keep Italian bees is very helpful, because Italian bees can do more jobs than Chinese ones. While you are an amateur bee keeper, or you don’t  have enough time to take care of bees , you ‘d better choose Chinese bees. They are not easily affected by diseases.

For one bee keeper , he can look after over 40 cages of  bees. In general, bees can live 40 only days.  Also it depends on weather, they would have a shorter life, if it is too hot. When it’s cold , the bees would have a long life. The bee queen can live for two years, because it mainly eat royal jelly or bee milk, after it mates with male bees, it only stay in bee cage to multiply or lay eggs.

How to breed the bee queen ?

After the old queen lay eggs in hives, the working bees use wax to seal them. And it takes 4 days to hatch. Newly born baby bees are fed by royal jelly. Normal bees can only be fed in for 4 days, and then the other bees use honey as food for such babies, while the new queen must be fed by bee milk for the whole life.

Yunnan owns warm climate  all the year  around. So more than 80% Chinese bee keepers will migrate here.

During  the daytime, the bees go out to collect honey at 9 am and come bake home at 5 pm. If it’s too hot at noon, they only stay in hives.
